Confusion on buying online... printer & rebate?

I'm about to order my laptop online and take advantage of the free iPod promo. I read about that, and I understand that after you receive your iPod, you're supposed to fill out the rebate form. Do you or do you not have to buy your printer at the same time as everything else in order to get the $100 rebate? Is Apple the only place that sells printers that are compatible with Macintosh computers or laptops? I can do without a printer for another month, but I need to make sure on everything before I start buying. Thanks!
