Confusion over 8gb teathered ipod touch

Hi folks, I bought my son this ipod touch in December for Christmas:

I used blackra1n to jailbreak it but each time the battery dies it requires teathering it to my PC to boot it back up again. I was under the impression that 2nd gen ipod touches didnt require teathering. Am I wrong?

I'm running Windows 7 and using Blackra1n.
