i just bought an airport express in hopes of extending my wireless network. i am having trouble setting it up. i called apple support and they told me they only support connections with airport extreme. how do i connect airport express to a wireless network

It can be done, so don't lose heart. The key is having the same channel number and SSID. These links should be useful (one for Linksys and one for DD-WRT):

There are other links as well to help, depending on your 3rd party router and its configuration.

I would also recommend configuring the Airport Express via Ethernet cable for efficiency and then letting it go. I use the Airport for AirTunes in the kids' room. However, they don't like to go to sleep while listening to music or stories....
 
those should help, right now i'm trying to set up with a linksys wrt54gs but only for testing purposes, tmrw i'm moving the express to its semi permanent location, i'm not sure which router is there though.
