Does anyone know how I could connect a regular land line phone to my mac so that I could get caller ID on my display rather than having to glance at the phone? (land line I meant)

Phone Amego (yes, that's how it's spelled) is still available and supported. It's $30, and you'll need a USB modem to physically make the connection to the phone line.
