Hi,
I do have a MBP 2018 which I want to connect to two older iMacs (late 2012) as external monitors.
I do have one TB2 - USB-C adapter and cam connect one of the iMacs to my MBP as second monitor
thought I am not succeeding by connecting the 2nd iMac as 2nd monitor (iMacs are connected via
TB2 cable). Is TB2 not suitable for chain connections?

Can I only connect both monitors by purchasing a 2nd TB2 - USB-C connector or do I have to connect
them in a specific order or using alternative key combinations (by now command-F2 for putting the
iMac in "slave" modus)?

I don't think it's a bandwidth issue, since Thunderbolt 2 should have enough bandwidth for two 2560x1440 displays. Well, the iMacs actually use Thunderbolt 1 so that could be an issue. Thunderbolt 1 has the same bandwidth as Thunderbolt 2 (two lanes of 10 Gbps), but Thunderbolt 2 combines the two lanes into a single connection (20 Gbps).

Does the MacBook Pro see one or both iMacs in the Thunderbolt section of System Information.app?
If the MacBook Pro cannot see the second iMac, then it cannot do Target Display Mode to that iMac.

When two computers are connected via Thunderbolt using host to host, I think that the Thunderbolt peripherals of one host cannot be seen by the other host and that would include other hosts.
