connect mid 2010 MBP to home theater system

I have a mid year 2010 MBP (mini display has audio pass through) the mini-display->HDMI dongle. I'm trying to connect to my home theater system. I have an Onkyo tx-sr606 and a sony TV. I want to connect the MBP directly to the receiver and have it be the hub.

Can anyone help with the steps needed to achieve this? What i need to do on the MBP? What i need to do with TV/receiver?

not really. I have the cables i need and my mbp is connected but it doesn't recognize the external display. So i need help more with how to get my mac set up properly.

any help?

its all working fine. for some reason its just needed a little juggle on the dongle. (oo-er, sounds a bit rude!)
