Connect old Mac to iMac display

Is it possible to use the new iMac display connected to an old G4 or G5?
How does the iMac know what to display (ie it's own system or an external), does the iMac have to be switched on and does it get as warm if only using as a display?

Which port does the input from G4 or G5 go into on iMac?

Finally, the old system connects to a monitor via VGA, which adaptor would be required to use with iMac as it's display?
