Connect plus charge?

Hi folks
I need to connect my iPad to a projector via HDMI and the lightning socket.
There's plenty of adaptors for the job but I wondered if I can, with a suitable adaptor, charge the iPad at the same time.

Be wary, though. Seems half the Amazon reviews say the pass-thru charging port doesn't work and half say it does. Apple's website description doesn't even mention it, which is really inexcusable.
