Hey guys, question for ya....

I have an external hd connected to a home network at my parents, and currently reside in another city. Is it possible to connect to that network from here so I can backup my computer to it?

Sort of like RDC, but to a HD instead of a computer?

Thanks!

You could do this a number of ways:

  1. VPN. Simplest to use, requires hardware (usually) and some knowledge to set it up.
  2. Port forwarding from your parents' router. This is reasonably easy, but you would need to consider security.

Either way, it probably wouldn't make a great backup solution. Your internet connection speed (upstream on your end, downstream on theirs) would have to be pretty high, and you would have to have backup software that could handle the high latency/slow connection and that could fail and resume gracefully.

Backblaze is $50/year per computer. I recommend something like that.
