Connect to shared drives works half the time

I have a problem with connecting to shared drives (on windows 2003k) at startup. I have the drive listed in the Login Items in the Users section. 50% of the time the connection is made, and 50% i get the connection failed error. Even when i get that error, as soon as i open the finder i see the server on the left and it opens immediately when i click it.

It almost feels like the OS is looking for the the drive before the NIC card is enabled.

Any ideas?
