I'm thinking about using my AW with an android phone, at least until the X comes out. I know the AW will not connect to the android phone at all, but my plan was to leave an extra iPhone at home connected to wifi. I could at least get notifications and use my fitness apps.

But I'm getting different answers on connecting the AW to wifi or even a phone hotspot. From what I understand this works much better in watch OS 4. From what I read once the iPhone remembers the wifi or hostpot network, the watch will connect to it if the iPhone isn't around.

Anyone successfully try this? And has anyone tried using an android phone with the AW like this?

Correct, the Apple Watch can connect to any "Known" Wi-Fi that the paired iPhone has already been connected to at least once in the past and is "remembered".

You can't connect to any new or unknown Wi-Fi networks directly from the Apple Watch.
