This is going to sound like a dumb question, but when you connect 2 Macs directly with an Ethernet cable, do you have to turn on file sharing before they will see each other?
Apple's own instructions don't mention turning on file sharing, they just say to connect the two machines, then on one of them choose Go>Connect to Server>Browse and look for the other machine's name.
I tried that but neither machine would see the other until I enabled file sharing on both. Is that normal, or does it take a minute for them to handshake and I was just being impatient, and it was just coincidental that they started seeing each other after I turned on file sharing?
