This is a hypothetical because I own neither - but it there a way to connect a 13 MBP (1280x800 16:10) to an external monitor at 1920x1080 16:9 without distortion?

On the technical specs page for the MBP it doesn't look like any 16:9 aspect ratio is available.

Supported resolutions: 1280 by 800 (native), 1152 by 720, 1024 by 640, and 800 by 500 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio stretched; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio stretched

Those are the resolutions for the Macbook's screen, not for an external monitor

Yes, provided that the monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080.

Detect Displays will try to find the native resolution of the monitor screen and automatically configure and connect at a base setting.

So if I were to hook it up via DVI would it be able to output at 1920x1080?
