I bought a Samsung LED monitor this morning and surprisingly, probably to keep the price low, it only came with a VGA cable. That's fine for now because my MacBook Bookendz dock has the VGA connector built in besides the DVI connector.

My question is about a DVI extension cable. Do I need dual or single link? It needs to work with the 2009 MBP and the 2008 black MacBook.

Thanks

IF VGA works, then Single link DVI will be more than sufficient. Dual link is only required for extremely high resolution displays like the 30" ACD.
