Connecting external drive

I know the the 4th generation iPad will not use a flash drive, but will it work with an external drive with it's own pwr supply? I want to make sure before I try this, I would hate to damage the IPad. I should mention I do have a wireless seagate hd that works with the iPad just fine. I was just wondering about connecting one using a cable.

The iPad lacks capability to connect a USB hard drive etc. The only device that can be used is a Camera with the Camera Connection Kit.
