connecting external monitor with Hdmi to VGA

So I got an old external monitor and thought I can utilize it with my Macbook Pro Retina..

I got myself the hdmi to vga adapter and connected the monitor, but it doesn't get any signal.
And the Mac screen itself goes black and only flashes shortly, as long as the hdmi cable is plugged.

Why is this happening and is there a way to get it working ?
