Hi guys, the title says it all. I want to be able to record my electric guitar directly on GarageBand on my MB Pro.

Here's what I have:

Is that enough "hardware"?

I tried connecting my guitar directly to both external speakers and headphones jack and tried running garageband and recording the sound but no go. What am I doing wrong?

Do I need some software plugin or is it a hardware lack problem?
tnx :)

bump for interest!

To properly record something into the input jack, you need some type of preamp that will accept the Hi-Z output of your guitar into its input and then provide an analog line-level output for the analog input of your MacBook Pro.

Yes, you have enough of hardware.

First, which MBP do you have? 13"? In that case set the audio port for "Sound Input" in System Preferences>Sound.

If you have a 15" or 17", plug the guitar into the line in.

Get "LineIn" from here: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/ (freeware), run it and set the pass thru. You should be able to hear the guitar now when you play it.

Run the GarageBand and record :). You can use the built-in effects to modify the sound/add distortion. Alternatively, you can also install Amplitube or similar program for more (and better) effects when recording in GarageBand or just playing the guitar through the MBP.

I've got the 15 inch one.
Great advice, I'll try it soon and let you know

edit:
I tried it trough the LineIn first, but I can't hear no sound from the speakers, I set the input from: line in, and output to: internal spearker (I reckon there is no other possibility).
When I set that I can see the "level" line go up and down as I play the guitar, but no sound is coming out of the speakers, also tried recording in GarageBand, but no go. Nothing is detected.

Any thoughts on what could be the solution?

Thanks a million!

First, sorry for waiting this long for a reply - I've completely forgotten about this thread.

Anyway...you should be able to hear the sound off your guitar out of the speakers if you see the Level go up and down :S. At least I do. Your settings are correct.

As for the GarageBand, you don't even need the LineIn app if you want to record or play with it. GarageBand has its own function that does the same as LineIn and it is called "monitor". See if you can hear your guitar if you set monitor to "on" (it is off by default).
