currently
Monitor 1 - HDMI port to HDMI monitor
Monitor 2 - USB-C port, to a switcher allowing me to switch between a monitor and a projector
Monitor 3 - USB-C to adaptor to HDMI monitor (This adaptor actually lets you connect either an HDMI or a VGA monitor to the USB-C port)

Monitor 3 is the problem. It stopped working today. can't figure out why.

the port still seems to be good, thank God, I tested it with another device.

my first thought is to try connecting with a cable that goes from USB-C to HDMI - just ordered one from Amazon - hopefully that will work. (this would mean it's the adaptor that is buggy ... I can live with that!)

If that does NOT work, I could possibly try connecting from a USB3 port to the HDMI port, but I do not know if there's a cable or an adaptor that can connect the two. (IE, Mac USB3 to HDMI - I saw a few cables out there that have the proper connectors on each end, but they all seemed to be NOT for Mac or NOT for Big sur.)

does anybody have any suggestions?

thanks
