connecting iphone to vista via ad hoc

i need help setting up this connection..i want to connect my iphone directly to my laptop that is running vista via ad hoc mode..i create the ad hoc connection and my iphone locates the signal but thats just about it i try to connect but on the laptop all it says is "waiting for users to connect" but thats it..i do not have a router..
