Connecting late 2008 mb pro with dead display to external display issues

Hi I've got a late 2008 mb pro 15" running later version of 10.8. Th screen is dead but the computer otherwise works and I can boot it up and get to desktop. I'm trying to connect to an external monitor using the mini dv and an Hdmi but I can't get into settings to coordinate it because I can't see the screen. Any suggestions?

Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is if you have an external keyboard/mouse you could plug that in and shut it to put it into clamshell mode, which would force everything over to the other screen.
