Connecting MacBook Pro to external display, how to set custom resolution?

Hi guys,

I got a old LCD display I want to connect my MacBook Pro up to. I connected it up but two problems. The resolution changes on both the MacBook Pro screen and the external LCD display. Is it possible to get it so that this only changes the display resolution for the external LCD? The other problem is that I need a resolution of 1280x768 for the external display, but the closest the MacBook Pro lists is 1280x960 which doesn't work on the external LCD. How can I sort these?
