Connecting macbook pro to legacy HP1220 printer ... possible???

I have a perfectly good legacy HP1220 printer which I value because it prints tabloid 11'x17' paper. I plugged it into the usb port of my macbook pro (lion) and nothing happened. Does anyone know if it is possible to connect a legacy HP printer to a new macbook pro running lion? Advice would be appreciated, especially if this is impossible. Then at least I'll know not to waste more time. Thanks!

Have you tried going to printers in system preferences and selecting the plus button?

Would really help to be specific about the printer model as there's an HP Laserjet 1220. I could tell by context that you weren't referring to the Laserjet as it cannot handle ledger size paper.
