I have a new white Macbook (which is nice to use) and have tried connecting it to a VGA monitor (Iiyama Pro 1900) or my TV (Sony Bravia LCD 40")using the mini-display port adaptor

I get a connection but there is no dock seen on both screens just the desktop picture), when I try opening a program such as Photoshop CS4, it will not display on the external screen. Only the folders on the Macbook can be displayed

I have tried system preferences/displays but no joy here.

Anyone know what is wrong? Is there a solution?

The white MB doesn't have a mini displayport. It has a mini DVI. I sometimes use my black MB with my 42" plasma via vga adapter. It doesn't show right now but I think it is set on "mirroring". If you don't want to mirror the MB you should be able to drag things like CS4 onto the LCD.
