Connecting MB to Play Audio on TV

Apologies if this has been dealt with before but I didn't find it.

I've hooked up my MB to my HDTV via the HDMI connection. Great picture.

I've connected the MB headphone out to the TV audio in and get no audio. Any suggestions?

Is the TV audio input set for the inputs you choose?
Have you taken a look at System Preferences > Sound > Output?
Is the audio transfer analog or digital?

I've not changed the TV audio - just connected to the TV. And I've done nothing with System Preferences. I believe System Preferences only refers to the headset or the speakers. But I'll check them and see if that helps.
