My girlfriends old Blackberry could connect via bluetooth and you could drag music, ringtones and pictures back and forward. You can do these things with an iPhone over WiFi using iTunes.

Apple being Apple, they decided to turn off the slow way to force you into a better experience so people don't do things the slow way and then complain about it being slow.
