Alright, so after buying the iPhone 3G, I was wondering how I could connect it to my TV to watch movies that I have on the device. I've read numerous threads and took advice from some, yet I haven't received a definite answer.

I need to use composite cables, as the TV I'll be connecting it to only takes composite (yellow, white, red) connections.

The "Apple Composite AV Cable" is an easy choice. However, at $50, I can't see how it would do any better than a simple $15 dollar cable. But, other accessories have been notorious for not working with the 3G iPhone, and I'm cautious to make any purchases. So...I came here for help. Any ideas?

You need to get the Apple brand composite AV cable right now. There is a chip in the connector which enables the TV out to work, and as far as I know, no one else has the license to make a cheaper cable set, yet.

Not only video works with these cables, but YouTube does too, which is pretty neat.

does it allow you to view exactly what you see on your iphone on your tv? As an example, will I see my homescreen and my icons or will I only see video when I play a movie through ITunes or a video through You Tube?

I had the AV cable for my iPod touch. All I could do was video videos on it, view youtube on it, and listen to music on it.

All you would see was the video it self, not the menu, nothing. It only showed when you went to play something, and asks you if you wish to display it on TV.

You just see the actual video, and that's about it.

I was REALLY hoping the games would be seen on the TV as well, but they do not. Hopefully this is something Apple can enable in the future.

Alright, thanks for the responses. Unfortunately, this is the answer I was afraid to hear, haha.

What we really need is the cable Apple uses in their Keynote speeches. They are always showing the full iphone interface on the screen as they are controlling it in their hand. Come on Apple! Release the good cable!
