Connecting to an older non Apple monitor

Pardon my ignorance on this issue, but I'm looking into purchasing a MB to use for both work and personal use.

At work I would be hooking the MB up to a two year old 19" Samsung monitor, is it true that out of the box the new MB can't do this? Do I need to buy some sort of an adapter? If so, which one, I've heard of a $30 and $100 adapter.

Any help would be most appreciated.

You will need an adapter.

What adapter you'll need depends on what kind of port is on the display.

Mini Displayport to DVI Adapter if your monitor has DVI output.
Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter if you monitor has VGA output.
Both are $29. I bought mine along with my macbook.
