connecting to itunes library remotely

hi

i have all of my music stored on a Mac and can succesfully share it on my local network using iTunes on the Mac and on my PC laptop. What i am now interested in doing is being able to connect to the library remotely when i am away from home but have internet access. is there a way of doing this with my PC laptop? would it be simpler if the laptop was a Mac laptop?
