I've researched this topic again and again... My conclusion, pretty much ALL Apple wireless keyboards have this problem. Apple haven't been able to fix (or improve upon) this particular technology--just this. I DON'T KNOW WHY BY NOW!!
Thus, sorry, NO solution to this problem. No firmware, no new batteries, no trashing "com.apple.bluetooth.plist," no select "favorite," no resetting PRAM and SMC will help. The problem will come back.
Trackpad is perfect, however.
<STRIKE THOUGH ALL BELOW>I just wanted to post this for those who may have the same scenario as I do, and seeking a solution. (I had been trying to find it for so long, but couldn't exactly.)
...HERE:
So, I kept getting "Connection Lost" message popping up without know why. I realized that I was using a Logitech wireless mouse. It operates at 2.4 Ghz, which is a NO NO according to apple support sites:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3048#5
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1365
I stopped using it (unplug the receiver), the keyboard has worked since. I'm certain the Logitech mouse's (third party device's) bandwidth caused interference with my keyboard. I ordered a refurbished Apple Magic Mouse to replace it.
Just to put it out there....
--------------------------RED MEANS NO LONGER RELEVANT
UPDATE (8-15-11):
Well, it appears that I'm getting the pop-up message again. I've researched and consulted with people, this problem seems to be widespread--and NEVER have been completely resolved--it's the technology Apple has not mastered. Too bad.

Sorry, for those who search this, trying to find the solution. THERE ISN'T yet, it's Apple. If I find the solution, I will update here.

UPDATE (8-17-11):
Yes, I seem to be obsessed with this wireless keyboard of mine.
But I have discovered that the keyboard has a sensor in front (behind the dull gray plastic), unlike the track pad. And when I have my keyboard elevated or angle toward the Mac, it seems to 'not' loose connection...at least thus far. How did I have it placed or angled before? Well, I have a BIG screen HDTV that I'm sitting on the floor facing it, and the wireless keyboard on my lap; and my Mac is on the table at the angle of elevation at 45 degrees angle and to the side.
Anyway, it's working consistently...yes, the same keyboard...let's see for how long. I will update.
[This above is really what I do below, more like it.]
------------------------
UPDATE (8-17-11, second time):
I've done more research and found out that the keyboard can't be too far away from your Mac--only 4 to 10 feet!!! Depends on what you have, example Mac mini allows no more than 4 feet.
-------------------------
UPDATE (8-18-11):
Working consistently thus far...i.e., by having the keyboard being close enough.
-------------------------
UPDATE (8-20-11):
OKAY....THIS MAY BE THE FINAL UPDATE....
The more I use it, the more I think it's some kind of interference around me. It's certainly NOT the keyboard. Why? It has been the exact same keyboard from the start, and at this moment, I've been using for 4 straight hours WITHOUT a single problem! I'm using it exactly the way want to without it being cut out in any way.
Good luck people.</STRIKE THROUGH>
