I use the SeaMonkey suite's Mail & Newsgroups app to send and receive email with my mac.com mail IMAP mail account. (It has mostly the same features as Thunderbird, except is has better integration with SeaMonkey's Navigator browser than Thunderbird has with Firefox.)
Anyhow, because SeaMonkey's mail app is a "third party" app, a few years ago Apple required that I use a special password to log into the mail server. Occasionally (maybe once per year, or less frequently) access to the server has failed, in which case I've had to re-enter the special password to restore access.
Well, now when SeaMonkey attempts to fetch mail, the attempt fails, resulting in a drop-down dialog that says, "Could not connect to mail server mail.mac.com; the connection was refused." The difference is that this time, the app isn't telling me that I need to enter the password, so it doesn't appear to be a password problem.
When I try sending, at first the SMTP server connection wasn't working either; I got a dialog that said, "Connection to server mail.mac.com timed out." But on a retry, the app displayed a dialog saying that the message was sent successfully, but a copy wasn't placed in the "Sent" folder. That makes sense; the "Sent" folder is stored on the IMAP server, and since I can't access that, my only option is to save a copy in a local folder.
I'm stymied. I don't know why the IMAP server would suddenly refuse a connection. I can access my mail using Apple's Mail.app, but that's no help. I can't use Mail.app because it doesn't provide an absolutely essential feature I need (message-displayed receipts).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
