I am considering the 12' rMBP base model to take to work. It would mainly be to use office - e.g., make powerpoint slides, word documents etc. Maybe the occasional SPSS. Would this be powerful enough for me?

Yes, it'd run it. But why pay the extra for something so limited? If you're just wanting casual use, save your cash and get the MacBook Air (which is more powerful). If you're just after the Retina display, pay the same price and get the Retina MacBook Pro (which is considerably more powerful and has an HDMI port, useful for showing slideshows and the likes).

Just my $0.02.
