In March, a week before Apple closed their stores in the US, I bought a 2019 Air. Yes, I got IIvx-ed and the better model came out just a few weeks later. However, something even worse has happened since.

That Air turned out to be a complete lemon.

In the five months I've used it, the following has happened:
--Two keys have nearly gotten stuck (common with the Butterfly, I know, but still bad)
--Lots of random restarts
--Word mysteriously stopped working and needed to be reinstalled
--Speakers sounded like they were blowing
--A few weeks ago, the display started going black (but still on, I could see the backlight) every so often when waking from sleep
--Today, the display stopped working altogether and only displays pink bars, if you're lucky!

The computer also seemed to run rather hot, especially during Skype calls.

I need a computer ASAP. For some reason, the Apple stores are showing zero in stock anywhere, but I did find some at the local Best Buys and will be going there as soon as they open. This is short notice, I know, but I'm considering purchasing a Pro instead of an Air this time around.

My needs are very traditional. I use Skype because I work from home (which explains why I need a computer before 2PM; my next newest backup is a 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook, which has been struggling just to type this and can't run Skype). My most frequently-used programs include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker Pro, and rarely Photoshop Elements. I'm not using this for movies, audio production, etc...I'm that person who trashes Garage Band when he buys a new Apple product.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a Pro, but I need to make sure it's worth the money. I'm looking at the 256GB SSD / 8GB RAM model (partially because it's what's in stock, partially because I think having more physical RAM than a 4GB unit would be worth it).

I'd lose the ability to have a gold computer, but that's really about it--and to be honest, the gold was a little too pink for my tastes on the Air. I'd settle for space gray despite its blandness (I don't really like the silver computers considering my past two Airs before the lemon were silver and I'm tired of it).

I'm also concerned about reliability. I need a computer that will be good to go every day. I have to use a makeshift combo of an iPod Touch and this ancient MacBook for my only morning call and don't want to do that any more than once. I have researched "Flexgate" and am hoping it is no longer an issue on the 2020 Air. I know Apple has had trouble with hinges for a long time (PowerBook 500s, anyone?) but never have had issues on my other Apple laptops until now.

For what I do, would a Pro be a good investment? I really don't want another Air that looks like what I have now given how horrible the experience has been in the five months I've had it.

As I posted in the other thread you started about your MBA woes, I think you should get your MBA diagnosed under the one-year warranty before buying a new machine. This might mean, however, that you'd be without a machine for a week or so, but Apple can advise about the timeframe.

If you really want to go for a 2020 13" MBP, look in Apple's refurb store where there are many standard and CTO configs available, all with very fast shipping, and the one-year warranty and option to buy Applecare+.

There’s some good deals in the Apple refurb store on 2019 Pro models. They are significantly faster than your Air and they will get to you the quickest. All new laptops on Apples website are taking longer to ship right now because of back to school. MacBook Pro’s the other day weren’t going to arrive until mid September.

The 2020 MacBook Air models are quite a bit more powerful than yours though. If they have the right config on the refurb store one of those would be fine.
