I'm thinking about ditching DirecTV and moving to AppleTV but have some questions. Do apps like Disney Channel or Disney Jr require a cable or satellite subscription? Obviously Netlfix and Hulu do but do most of the other apps require subscriptions?

most of the other apps need a cable subscription unfortunately. 🙁

For now most of the channels on ATV needs a tv provider subscription.

But you can always just buy seasons of the shows you watch from iTunes. Or get an HD antenna for live programming and use HULU+ as your DVR/on demand.

Some members here wait for discounted iTunes gift cards to go on sale. Buy the largest amount and use that to pay for their Hulu/Netflix for the year. This saves even more money.

TiVo wins hands down.

Apple TV is an "over the top" device. Meaning it is in a complementary category to Subscription TV.

Apple TV is all streaming. It does not have a coaxial input to get ota content
