Hi

So I'm looking at getting an iMac 27" 5k (core i7, Rx 580 with 8 gigs ram, and upgrading RAM on side - 32 or 64 gb total).

Curious if people find that the imac produces less dust? I have a home built machine that is on all the time and I get a lot of dust build up in my office from the computer. Wondering if the same could be said for an iMac?

Also, I don't anticipate issues, but I run 2 diagnostic 3 MP monitors on the side. I currently use a Radeon 580 on my current machine so it should run the same with an iMac I believe.... I'll have to wait and see if Vmware or parallels can run my work software well enough without boot camp.

Thanks

Computers of course don't generated dust. The fans just mean that the dust that's already in the room gets gathered together.
And I really don't think it's that noticeable, but the stand and around the vent port may need dusting a bit more than the rest of your table.

What was your second question? If your monitors will work? I see no reason they wouldn't.
If VMWare/Parallels will run your work software well enough? I have no idea since I don't know what software that'd be. But hell, maybe even Wine could do the trick.

Seeing as the iMacs use hermetic seals, I believe it is a safe to assume that the iMacs would produce less dust than a PC tower. Nothing is getting in there.

I would check with the diagnostic monitor's manufacturer website to see if they support macOS. I've had monitors in the past where I didn't check, and ended up not being able to use the monitor (it shows up as a resolution of 0x0 in macOS). Other than that, you should be fine.

Edit: By producing dust, I assume you mean 'collecting' dust.

For the insides, yeah. I took the question as meaning the outside, in which case the exhaust fan will of course still push the dust that is already flowing around the room, perhaps gathering it more tightly.

Dust collection has a lot to do with air pressure. If your PC has a positive air pressure (more air forced in to create higher pressure inside the PC than the surrounding environment), then you end up with less dust accumulation inside the machine. The computer itself doesn’t produce dust, the living things in your house do. You, other humans, and pets produce most of the dust in the home by shedding dead skin. Appealing, isn’t it?

That said, I have no idea if this is how Apple approaches cooling design on the iMac.

What helps a lot in this case is that the iMac sits on top of the desk and not under it. This makes huge difference regarding dust...
