Considering ordering the X1900

Any news on whether the upgrade kit is a rev. 2 card? I want a higher frame rate in WOW but I don't want the heat issues with the rev. 1 card.

I also want to be able to use the DVI to video cable which according to Apple, only works with the ATI card.

I'm going to wait till Tuesday before I order just in case Apple releases better Mac Pro cards.

Why not find a used one for the PC (Make sure to get the correct one) and update the BIOS with the Apple bios?

After that, when nVidia 8800 line is compatible with the Mac Pro, you can upgrade to that if needed.

Do you mean the DVI to VGA adapter only works on ATI cards? This is false because I've used the Apple adapters on a PC.

I seriously don't see a reason why that won't work on the 7300GT.

I honestly don't know either but it is listed in the support section of the apple site as well.

If it works over any DVI connection as listed the only other issue I could possible think of would be the support through the nVidia drivers.

That would also rule out the Power Mac G5 on specific models as well though.

I recently purchased a Mac Pro with stock Geforce 7300 and would like to upgrade it to the Radeon X1900 w/o paying the high premium from Apple.

I just flashed an old x1900xt I had laying around.

FYI, the PC version of the card was an Asus X1900XT 512MB RAM.

I also changed out the stock cooler with a passive one from Arctic Cooling to keep it as quiet as possible:

OK, for the record

ALL DVI -> VGA ADAPTERS ARE THE SAME

It looks like the above part simply adapts it to VGA and then to RGB for the S-Video and RCA. In that case, it would work with any video card.

And second of all, flashing works great. I wrote the aforementioned article myself and so far the only people who have bricked theirs have attempted to flash a card that was not a X1900XT 512MB.

Also, steer clear of any card with a crossfire plug on the back (it must have two DVI ports, TV out is OK too but it won't work after you flash it).

EDIT:

OK after reading a little bit, it would appear that it requires the video card you plug it into to be compatible.

While it should work in the X1900 (and even flashed x1900), that's no assurance it'd work in the 7300.
