Considering to upgrade the OS of 17" MBP from 10.6.8

Hello, I have a 17" MBP. It was a 2010 or 2012 model. OS X 10.6.8, 2.66 GHz i7, 8GB RAM, 500GB HD.

1. If I want to upgrade the OS to Marvericks or Yosemite later, what can I do? I went to software update but neither OS was listed.

2. If I buy a 2014 rMBP 15", can I transfer all the software, settings and files to the new machine using Migration?

3. I had a 2012 rMBP 15". I took out the SSD before returning it to the company. It was running the OS before Mavericks came out. What can I do if I also want to transfer the settings, data and additional program not on my MBP 17" to this new machine?

It is a 2010 MBP, since there is no 2012 17" MBP, only a 2011 17" MBP, and that did not have a 2.66 GHz i7 CPU.

1. Since OS X 10.9 Mavericks is an UPGRADE and not an update, you will not find OS X 10.9 Mavericks in the UPDATES section of the Mac App Store (MAS).
You will find OS X 10.9 Mavericks via the search field of the MAS.

2. If the software is compatible with the OS, probably, but some software may need to be reactivated. Why not use the installers for the software that does not migrate that well.
