Usually I would upgrade on a four-year basis, but some recent life circumstances motivate me to get the 16-inch MBP now. I'm currently living in Singapore and working for a local university and I can get the advanced config for US$2,700 (with staff discount). However I got a job offer in London and might move next month and saw the exact same config there was US$3,600 (without uni discount obviously). If the price differential wasn't so large I'd definitely wait until the 2020 model comes out.

Would you personally upgrade from a 2016 to 2019 MBP? Both are advanced (no base, no BTO) models.

I personally went from base 2016 to base 2019. I don't really tax the machine as I mostly use if for Citrix, facebook, forums and youtube so either are overkill. The battery is a bit better, I like true tone, the larger screen, the speed but the most surprising upgrade was sound. The speakers are amazing. I didn't hate the old keyboard but I did have it serviced once and the new one is nicer except for the light leakage around keys which is minor.

I went from a base 2017 15” to a 2019 16” with the i9, 32gb ram, and upgrades GPU. Definitely way more powerful and I feel it. If you include the much better keyboard I’d say it’s worth it.

Yes. the 2019 16-inch machine is the Macbook Pro Apple should have been making/releasing the last few years. The keyboard is a major, major improvement over butterflop. Screen is great, extra real estate very helpful. Touchbar makes much more sense now, given its position plus physical ESC key. Also really liking the separate touch ID / power button. Sound is fantastic out of the new Macbook Pro. Also really happy with the four Thunderbolt 3 ports, it's really starting to come into its own with peripherals, unbelievably fast external SSDs, etc.

It's a worthy upgrade, you'll be happy with it.
