2017 12 inch MacBook.

(Running big sur 11.6.1) 8 gig ram and 250 gig hard drive. With 86gig available. It says it’s “flash storage” i’m not sure if that’s an SSD.

It’s constantly crashing. May run for a couple of minutes only. It’s not battered, very good condition. But something is going on. Any suggestions would be most helpful. I’m trying to do something on it now and it’s crashed 8 times in 20 minutes. Finally stopped crashing after around 15 crashes.

When booting I (normally) get a box saying “verifying Microsoft outlook”. Which is installed, but not used.

I don’t have antivirus software but don’t think it has a virus.

Any pointers would be most welcome.

Update. I downloaded and tried to install Ventura. That failed (see screenshot). I also tried to update the existing (big Sur). But now will not boot at all. So i’m stuck

Below is the crash report. Well beyond my expertise to decipher this.

Can you get into the recovery system? (restart and hold command-R)
Does it crash on that side?

Might help narrow it down software vs. hardware issue

First thing I would do is back up all your important files, documents, photos, etc. to a usb drive, external disk if you are having problems.

Have you had a chance to try what cjbriare said above? Disk utility can test the drive for you. You can also reinstall your operating system from here.

Alternatively, if you prefer, you can make an appointment at your local Apple Store and they can run diagnostics for you and let you know what the issue is.

Do let us know how you get on.

thank you guys. I have repaired it. but it too an entire evening. booted in recovery mode (didn't work). and safe mode. round and round and constantly failed. eventually, worked but now I'm not entirely sure how. Its now running High Sierra. its entirely wiped everything, but thats not a problem as I have an iMac & everything is on iCloud. so I'm up and running again.

The MacBook is a 2017 12 inch (YES 12 inch). I'm hoping now to install the latest OS (Ventura?). but not entirely sure its comparable, as the apple site says 2017 mocbook pro & air but no mention of the 12 inch (which is neither of those). I think mine is called a "MacBook retina" but i'm not entirely sure. for future reference, can I go into an apple store for help, with an old machine? Martin

Yes your model is compatible with Ventura, it's listed on the site for 2017+ MacBook.

Perhaps the erase and install helped? It sounds like you initiated the recovery option to reinstall the OS that shipped with your Mac. You could certainly try to upgrade to Ventura and see where it goes, but be prepared to play the waiting game again for upgrade/possible rollback if it crashes again afterward

Thank you. Yeah. That’s exactly what I was thinking. I’ve had to set up email accounts again and lots of stuff, so may as well get on with upgrading (correct terminology?) before going too far down the route of setting it all up again.

I decided that I may as well install Ventura. However, no mention of that in (apple logo)-about this Mac-software update. Cant see anything in system preferences either. I also looked in App Store and the apple website. Its defiantly comparable with my laptop. I'm a bit confused, to say the least.

Glad you sorted this out but a bit of advice if I may. This thing will die from one of two things. SSD or CPU failure. They all do eventually but just a warning. Macbook Retina 12" is the worst model that Apple ever made. Having no fan was the biggest contributor to premature death. See here https://www.macrumors.com/2022/07/0... is clear, power efficient Apple silicon chips.

Thanks. I specifically wanted the 12 inch. The 11 is too small and 13 too big. I really like it, but didn’t know there were issues with this model. I don’t have any important data on it so if it fails won’t be a major problem for me. Worth knowing though.

I am also a huge fan of the 12 inch MacBook. It is the perfect size for portability. I not too long ago purchased a fully loaded 2017 hoping it will give me another several years of service.
