Constant location / disk writes from News app

Does anyone else experience this? News pops up my location icon on the menu bar every 10 minutes or so for no apparent reason. It also seemingly writes 50-100MB to disk every 7.5 minutes on the dot. This seems to have started with 11.5.

I have no earthly idea what's going on with this app and I really don't feel like wiping and transferring everything back over.

I'm on a 2019 16 inch.

Any help would be super appreciated!

Yes, my News app is constantly maintaining a 2-5GB disk cache and uses upwards of 900MB of RAM at any given time. I can't imagine this is necessary for a basic news reader.
