And the only way to get it back is to switch into aeroplane mode briefly, then it comes back.

The phone seems to want to default to Edge network even when there's 5 bar 3G freely available.
Why?

What carrier are you with? I'm with fido in Canada and had this problem on my iPhone3g and now on my 4s.

The problem flares up for months at a time and then stops being an issue. I feel like its a problem with the carrier settings, but apple and fido would rather point fingers at each other than help my find a solution.

Makes me wonder why I stuck with fido with the new handset. I guess I assumed it was an "old hardware" issue on my 3G, but this is ridiculous on a 3 week old phone. :(
