contact photos do not work

I have a jailbroken 3GS. When I assign an image to a contact, it disappears the moment I exit from contacts. This happens if I choose from the library or take a new photo. I have also tried using a few Facebook contact syncs and those didn't work either. I do not sync my contacts or photos with mobile me or iTunes. When I look into the var/mobile/media/photos/thumbs it's empty. I have looked all over and have only found solutions for phones that won't take pictures or are having trouble getting them to sync, which is not my issue. Thanks in advance for any help someone can offer.
