Contact Specific Notifications

I have different tones for my contacts. For instance, for John Appleseed the message notification is "Keys." However, in messages this custom notification doesn't play. Instead of it playing the custom notification which is "Keys" it plays the default notification which is "Note." It worked fine in El-Capitan but after I did a clean install of Sierra my contact specific tones aren't playing. By the way, these contact specific tones are the built-in Apple ones, they aren't custom ones I created. Also, the issue just seems to be with the Messages app, as the contact specific notifications in FaceTime work just fine. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.
