Contacts annoyance

if I swipe down, search for "Fred" and I get a hit in contacts, I can see the contacts entry but there's no way to edit it.
If instead I go direct into contacts, and search for Fred I get what is outwardly the same entry, but with an "edit" link.

Is this "just how it is" or is there a setting I can change so I can edit immediately I find it?

I see what you're saying; that is odd. It gives you a "read only" version of the full contact card.
