Contacts getting doubled (and tripled and...)

We use Microsoft Office365 as our mail server and my iPad2 with OS5.1.1 likes to double and triple (and sometimes more) the names in my contact list. I've shut off the contacts in iCloud (checked iCloud contacts and they aren't multiple) , deleted all the contacts in the exchange account (on iPad) then re-connected, removed the exchange account from iPad then reinstalled, nothing seems to work for long. Day later back with multiple contacts!
