My friend has an iPhone without iCloud enabled, and with no backups. So, I helped him enable iCloud for the purposes of iCloud Backups. When enabling, it asked if I want to merge data like Safari bookmarks, etc, and I selected 'Merge'.

A day later, he called me and told me that all of his contacts have disappeared. His contact list is now empty. There are no iTunes backups.

He has tried:

* Disabling contacts on iCloud settings (no prompt): still no contacts
* Re-enabling contacts in iCloud settings (no prompt): still no contacts

What can he do? There are a lot of important contacts, unfortunately...

First, it seems that they were so important that the only place he had them was on that iPhone.

Has he checked the iCloud web portal to see if they are there? I would expect that they aren't but that's the first thing to check.

This is why I got him to enable iCloud backup. He's not that savvy with technology.

Unfortunately, it seems the act of enabling iCloud wiped his contacts.
