Contacts Lost. Retreaved everything else

Hi all.

I have the iphone 3GS. I wanted to retreave all my contact ect. to my new iPhone 4. I had a fresh itunes installed on my laptop and started syncing. Moments later all my contacts were lost on my old phone! I read on a thread that i should use my backup thats created while syncing to recover my lost data. Done. All is back but my contacts! Even call history ect. but my contacts?! Any help would be appreciated.
