Contacts not syncing properly

I recently moved to Australia and purchased a new iPhone 4 here. Before moving, I backed up all of my contacts and information on my old iPhone to my Macbook air. After I synced the new phone, something bizarre happened with my contact information. Everything is seemingly stored fine under my contacts, but my text history shows a random assortment of contact names, and then just phone numbers...even though I have those numbers saved under a contact name. Also when I go to my contacts and send a text, it does not work. However, when I text the number directly, it works. I am very confused. I am currently using 4.3.3. Hope you can help!
