Here is a common problem I had syncing my contacts on my iphone--which I got resolved after a few trail and errors.
Problem : I would get a call or would call someone and then wanting to save the contact , would hit the (i ) icon next to it and look at the available options, to 'create a new contact', I would clikc that and fill out all the details like--Name ,etc. and after completing that--would go to my contacts, and search for the name--and guess what?--it wouldn't show up!.
I thought I 'JUST' created it?...
SO now I started googling and searching up on what I was doing wrong--or what iPhone was doing wrong(apparently--In my head--I am thinking--its a magical device and 'nothing' could go wrong with my iPhone, so it must be me)
Checks
here is what I found--and what I did to have all my contacts sync up with my calls, mail and text.
3 things--I went into my settings and
1) Clicked icloud--, enabled (Mail, Contacts)
2) Clicked 'Mail'(I only have my gmail)--enabled(Mail, Contacts)

Solution(I think?)
Then backtracked back to settings and clicked 'Contacts'
Clicked contacts
1)Top most item was 'Accounts'--clicked it and made sure the 'contacts and mail' were still showing enabled
2)Enabled 'Contacts found in Apps'
3)Lastly--clicked the last option 'Import SIM contacts'--(which showed up in blue)
It gave a few options--(icloud,gmail, etc)
clicked each one of them and saw, importing Sim contacts show and disappear--showing that respective options, were having sim contacts imported for each of those options.
DONE!!

Now to check if it worked.
Went to contacts and typed in the last contact I created(as in the problem solution above)
The contact now showed!!, and so did all the others.
