Contacts number format in 10.9.5

I need some help to format my Contacts numbers. It´s in the American format xxx-xxx-xxx. Ho do I put the whole number without spaces ? I live in Portugal but my OSX is in English.
 
International contacts formatting

I live in the US but I have many overseas contacts.
Is there really only one way to format telephone numbers?
Surely there has to be an option for country code, etc. But I can't find it.
