contacts syncing issue

My husband bought a verizon iphone recently and manually entered 130 business contacts. He asked me to back them up on my imac. I plugged his phone in and before I could say "boo" itunes put all MY contacts (300 of them) on his phone, and added his contacts to mine on my computer. He spent an hour deleting mine from his phone, and is speaking to me again. I can delete his contacts from my computer but can anyone tell me how to back up his list without the co-mingling happening again?

One way I can think of is simply creating a new user/profile on your imac for him. This way he can freely back up only his phone anytime without having to worry about your music or other info merging.
